SKCTC Snap Alert

All Southeast Campuses will operate remotely Thursday 2/20/25 
and Friday 2/21/25. Weekend classes will resume on normal 
schedule.

Congratulations to Southeast Honors student Crystal McCumbers on receiving a full-tuition scholarship to Lincoln Memorial University! She has maintained a 4.0 GPA while keeping a challenging course load. Way to go!

March 30-April 2 Southern Regional Honors Council Conference - Orlando, Florida

Five honors students and three faculty attended SRHC conference in Orlando. This is the third year Southeast has attended. Conference events included many interesting presentations by honors students, faculty and administrators from across the region. Caroline Mayes presented on the topic of building community across multiple campuses. The trip also included excursions to Universal Orlando Islands of Adventure, the ocean at Cape Canaveral, and a hot springs.

March 30 - Morgan Baker and Chandler Gage Jones are chosen as Southeast's representatives on the KCTCS All-Academic Team. Congrats to these bright and dedicated honors students!

March 20- Bloodroot Contest Winners Announced

The Southeast Honors Program and Donna Cox, managing editor of Bloodroot, are excited to announce the winners of this year's contest.
--Thomas Alan Holmes: "How the Dead Like It" for poetry

Our judge was Ariel Dingus, assistant professor of English on the Whitesburg campus, and the issue will be printed later this spring, and those chosen for publication will receive notification and a contributor copy of the issue.

March 4 Identity Mask Painting Workshop, Intro to Contemporary Thought - Middlesboro campus

While in the identity section of the philosophy seminar, HNR 101 students gathered on the Middlesboro campus. In class, they had considered the layers and factors of identity, social identity vs. personal identity, and potential conflicts that can arise. During the painting workshop, they visually represented aspects of their own identities through the masks.

February 26-28 Kentucky Honors Roundtable - University of Louisville

Students and faculty made the trip to U of L for the annual meeting of Kentucky honors programs, meeting faculty and students from many other colleges and universities. The events included a trivia tournament, workshops, and presentations. Faculty members Caroline Mayes and Ariel Dingus presented on the topic of co-teaching across multiple campuses.

October 16 ETSU Campus Tour, Johnson City, TN

Faculty and students in the honors Contemporary World seminar and in the Honors Program went for a campus tour of Eastern Tennessee State University in Johnson City, TN. Students met with the dean of ETSU s honor college and learned about the programs and scholarships available to transfer students.

They then went to Our Body: The Universe Within exhibit at the Hands On Museum. The exhibit featured human bodies that had gone through a plasticization process and were in various stages of dissection so as to show the internal anatomy of the human body.

Sept. 29 Oct. 2 Idea Festival, Louisville

Two honors students, Marina Martin and Michael Reazola, along with faculty Caroline Mayes and Melissa Helton went to Louisville to attend the Idea Festival. This was the second year Southeast Honors attended the festival. Sessions spanned from Daniel Kish (who is blind and teaches people how to echolocate) to Ndaba Mandela (who continues the work of his grandfather, Nelson Mandela).

Sept. 25-26 Kentucky Honors Roundtable EKU, Richmond, KY

Director Melissa Helton and Honors Advisor Rhona Creech attended the Kentucky Honors Roundtable, a conference for honors programs throughout the region. Honors students from around the state made presentations on a wide variety of topics. Everyone participated in a trivia contest and enjoyed EKU s facilities, including watching a show about black holes at the planetarium.

August 28 Cumberland Gap National Historical Park

Honors student Gage Jones is a volunteer at CGNHP. He and his brother, also a volunteer at the park, lead a hike up to Tri-State Peak for the Contemporary World seminar class. At the peak, hikers are in Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia.
