TRIO Student Support Services/Academic Advantage Program

Academic Advantage (AA) is our name for the TRiO Student Support Service Program at Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College. The program was especially designed to help college students achieve academic success. The primary goal is to provide academic, financial aid, and personal counseling to help participants to be successful while attending Southeast. The Academic Advantage Program serves 140 participants each year. It is funded by the U. S. Department of Education. All services are free. The following services are offered: 24/7 tutoring, intensive advising/coaching, transfer/career counseling, campus visits, academic monitoring, cultural enrichment opportunities, student success workshops, grant aid (Academic Achievers' Award), newsletters, and disability referral.

Academic Advantage students are:

  • 3 times more likely to not drop out
  • 2.5 times more likely to graduate
  • 4 times more likely to transfer
  • Almost 2 times more likely to keep a C average or better

You are eligible to join if:

  • You fall within a certain income guidelines OR
  • Neither of your parents has a 4-year bachelor's degree OR
  • You have an eligible, verifiable disability

To receive the Academic Achievers’ Award, Student Support Services grant aid, students must be a current participant in the Academic Advantage program and receiving a Federal Pell Grant. Other stipulations will apply.

The Academic Advantage Program is a Student Support Services TRIO Project grant 100% federally funded by the U.S. Department of Education to serve 140 participants annually in the amount of $337,999 per year for the period of 2020-2025.
