
Community Diversity Breakfast held at Benham School House Inn
The ninth annual Community Diversity Breakfast celebrating the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was held January 17 at the Benham School House Inn. The event featured speakers Rev. Sandra Jones and Rev. Justin Preston of Big Stone Gap, Va., who spoke of Dr. King s life as he led the American Civil Rights Movement, leading to the signing of the Voting Rights Bill of 1964. Rev. Preston also delivered Dr. King s legendary I Have a Dream speech. The address was made in August of 1963 from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. The local event featured music, fellowship and food as community members came together to reflect on the many accomplishments of Dr. King. The breakfast was sponsored by the Southeast Kentucky Community & Technical College Office of Diversity headed by Carolyn Sundy; Upward Bound Math/Science and the Black Student Union also worked to produce the event.(Photos by Chris Jones)
