Event marks 100th anniversary of coal shipped from Harlan
The Coal and Rail Centennial celebration and was held August 25 at the courthouse marking the first shipment of coal by rail from Harlan County.
Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear attended and addressed the large gathering, and Dr. W. Bruce Ayers, president of Southeast Kentucky Community & Technical College, served as master of ceremonies. The event was sponsored by the Harlan County Historical Network headed by Southeast archivist Larry LaFollette. The occasion also included comments by historians as well as remarks from state and local officials who spoke of the importance of the coal industry in Kentucky and specifically, Harlan County.
