Technical Standards

Respiratory Care students must have sufficient:

  • communication skills (verbal, nonverbal, and written) to communicate their needs promptly and effectively;
  • auditory perception to receive verbal communication from patients and members of the health care team to assess health needs of patients through the use of monitoring devices (e.g. cardiac monitors, stethoscopes, ventilators, and fire alarms);
  • gross and fine motor coordination for the manipulation of RC equipment;
  • tactile and visual acuity needed for accurate monitoring of life support systems and for patient assessment;
  • intellectual and emotional functions to plan and implement respiratory care;
  • ability to ascend and descend stairways;
  • ability to lift a minimum of 25 pounds;
  • ability to wear a face mask and gloves.
