When JT Alred enrolled in the Automotive Technology program at Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College, he arrived with something you can’t teach—discipline, focus, and a clear sense of direction. What he found at Southeast helped turn those qualities into a pathway for long-term success.
Today, JT is a standout student, maintaining a 4.0 GPA and earning a reputation among faculty for his reliability, attention to detail, and strong problem-solving skills. Whether diagnosing issues in the lab or completing coursework, he approaches every task with precision and purpose.
But JT’s success is not defined by grades alone.
Through Southeast’s hands-on Automotive Technology program, he has gained real-world experience while earning certifications in brake systems, fuel systems, and hybrid and electric vehicle technology—credentials that position him for success in an evolving industry. Just as importantly, the mentorship he has received from faculty has helped him grow into a confident, career-ready professional.
A pivotal moment in JT’s journey came through the William T. Whitfield Scholarship.
Selected for his academic achievement and dedication, JT initially viewed the scholarship as an opportunity to ease the financial burden of college. But during his high school awards night, the experience became something much more meaningful. In a moment no one expected, JT and the Whitfield donors discovered a shared connection—his great-grandfather had once worked for the Whitfield Mining Company.
What began as a scholarship quickly became a relationship.
Since that moment, the Whitfield family has remained actively involved in JT’s journey, offering encouragement, mentorship, and opportunities to expand his professional network. Their investment reflects the true power of philanthropy—not only opening doors, but walking alongside students as they step through them.
JT plans to graduate on May 15, 2027, with a long-term goal of owning his own automotive shop. He is building more than technical expertise; he is building a future grounded in hard work, legacy, and ambition.
His story is a clear example of what happens when determination meets opportunity—and when students are supported not just financially, but personally and professionally.
