A book written by Dr. Rick C. Mason, a vice president at Southeast Kentucky Community amp; Technical College, is now available for purchase.

The Big Picture: Life, Meaning and Human Potential, was published recently and deals with the philosophy of self-improvement, according to its author, a Bell County resident and a member of the SKCTC faulty for the past 13 years.

Taking a year to complete the project, Mason, who teaches a class in human potential, initially began the venture as a supplement for the class but discovered it had an appeal to the general populace. Circulated by Big Picture Publishing, the book rolled off the press in May and draws on issues discussed in his classes over the past decade.

I wanted to promote critical thinking and to challenge individuals to question things and to think for themselves. I have attempted to show how life is connected; interwoven by various behaviors such as personality, intelligence, gender and relationships. Sometimes people dont see these connections, he said. The book, as I often say, is for people who like to think and for those who need to think.

The paperback is on sale at Book Haven located in the Village Square Mall in Middlesboro and is also available through Amazon.com and on Kindle. The book is priced at $16.

Mason, who holds degrees from Lincoln Memorial University, Eastern Kentucky University and a doctorate from the University of Kentucky, will appear at a book signing set for Saturday, July 14 at 7 p.m. at the Bell Theater in downtown Pineville. His appearance is in conjunction with the Woodsongs Coffeehouse event.

Mason and his wife of 28 years, Patty, are the parents of a son, Richard.
