Southeasts Scholarship Golf Tournament attracts record field

A record field of 18 foursomes participated in the annual Lilian Faye Simpson Scholarship Golf Tournament held August 1 at Sleepy Hollow Golf Course at Cumberland. Golfers from across the region enjoyed 18 holes of competitive golf and camaraderie and all for a good cause assisting deserving students at Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College. A total of over $14,000 was raised with proceeds going to support scholarships and Southeast Foundation operations.

The event celebrated its 27th year and corporate sponsors included the Kentucky Coal Academy and ARH, with ABS/Xerox as gold sponsors. According to Tiffany B. Scott, event director, the 2015 scramble format event, due to an expanding field, was divided into two flights with play beginning at 8 a.m. and 1 p.m.

It was a wonderful event, she noted. And, we so very much appreciate our sponsors and those golfers who participated. Our committee worked very hard to make it a fun time and a successful one as well, as we work to help deserving students.

Once again in 2015, Creech Chevrolet, Buick and GMC sponsored an automobile that could have been won by the first golfer who recorded a hole-in-one on a designated par-tree hole. No golfer recorded the ace.

The Parkway Pharmacy team comprised of Junior Watts, Todd Watts, Drew Chamberlain and Mark Keith was the winner, followed by the Harlan County Farm Bureau team of Eddie Leisge, Connor Leisge, Don Miniard and Allan Sutton. Taking third was the Tri-State Mine Cable Team 1 of Eli Estep, Brett Widner, Brendon Rutherford and Sammie Moore.
