Southeast to host childrens photo workshop at Spring On Cloverlick Arts Festival

In an effort to introduce children to not only the art of photography, but how the skill can be utilized as a profession, Workforce Solutions of Southeast Kentucky Community amp; Technical College is hosting a Childrens Photography Workshop on Saturday, March 31. Titled Kids amp; Cameras, the workshop will feature sessions on portrait photography, landscape, sports, as well as documentary and news photography.

This will not only be an educational day for interested children, it will be a fun day, too, said Jennifer McDaniels of Southeast Community amp; Technical College. We have very talented, local photographers lined up to do the instructing, and the sessions will be interactive in nature. It will be a wonderful opportunity for the children to tap into their creativity and to look at their world around them through the artistic window of a camera lens.

The Kids amp; Cameras Photography Workshop will be geared toward children in grades third through eighth. Disposable cameras will be provided for workshop participants, but preregistration is required. Members of the Harlan County Photography Guild are partnering up with SKCTCs Workforce Solutions in hosting the workshop. Local Portrait Photographer Melinda Clem Dillman will be leading the session on portrait photography, multi-Associated Press winner Chris Jones will lead the session on sports photography, and former Harlan Daily Enterprise reporter Jennifer McDaniels will lead the session on documentary and news photography. The workshop will conclude with a trip to Kingdom Come State Park where local photographer Joseph Jones will lead the children on a short nature walk, which will be a part of the landscape session.

The Harlan County Photography Guild is excited to partner up with Southeast to offer this workshop, said Dillman. Our Guild has always strived to be an asset to the community with the various exhibits and programming weve produced. Im particularly excited about this event, because its about education and equipping children with the right knowledge and skills to use photography not only as an artistic outlet, but hopefully as a profession.

Images from the Kids amp; Cameras workshop will be included in this years Spring On Cloverlick arts festival held by Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College. Spring On Cloverlick is an annual arts celebration featuring competitions in poetry and art for students in Kindergarten through senior year in high school. New components are being added to this years Spring arts festival, including the childrens photography exhibit. First, second, and third-place winners, as well as honorable mentions, will be chosen in the childrens photography exhibit and will be announced during the Spring On Cloverlick awards ceremony slated to take place on Monday, April 30, in the gallery of the SKCTC Edsel T. Godbey Appalachian Center.

The Kids amp; Cameras workshop will begin at 1 p.m. on March 31 in the theater of the Edsel Godbey Appalachian Center. After a brief program introduction, which will include a slide show presentation, the photography sessions will begin. Dillmans portrait photography session will take place at 1:20 p.m. on the second level of the Edsel Godbey Appalachian Center in the dance room. Chris Jones session on sports photography will take place at 1:45 p.m. also on the second level in the music room. McDaniels session on documentary and news photography will take place in a second-level classroom at 2:10 p.m., and then the participants will load onto a bus at 2:35 p.m. and travel to Kingdom Come State Park where Joseph Jones session on landscape photography will be taught starting at 2:50 p.m. Bottled water and snacks will also be provided at the park.

Participating children are encouraged to bring their own cameras. Disposable digital cameras will be provided for those who choose not to bring their own. Cost of the Kids amp; Cameras workshop is $12 and preregistration is required. Preregistration must be completed at SKCTC Workforce Solutions Administrative Assistant Lyna Cornetts office on the Cumberland Campus. Cornett can be contacted at (606) 589-3047.
