Southeast students participate in ARCs teaching project
Students from Southeast Kentucky Community amp; Technical College recently participated in the Appalachian Teaching Project made possible by funding from the Appalachian Regional Commission. Twenty-two SKCTC students travelled to Washington, D.C. to make presentations during the annual ATP Conference.
The Appalachian Teaching Project engages students and citizens from Appalachia in posing answers to the question: How can we build a sustainable future for Appalachian communities? The project is sponsored by the Appalachian Regional Commission, an agency of the federal government. The project teaches students and communities about the work of the ARC, its state and local partners and the goals of the Commissions strategic plan.
The first project was held in the fall of 2001 and emerged from a number of meetings of members of the Consortium of Appalachian Centers with Appalachian Regional Commission staff. The consortium is currently composed of 15 colleges, universities and community colleges from Appalachia that are dedicated to working more closely together in service to the Appalachian region in order to improve the quality of life for its residents.
Participating schools for 2009 in addition to Southeast Kentucky Community amp; Technical College included Morehead State, Appalachian State, North Georgia College, Northeast Alabama Community College, University of Tennessee, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Emory and Henry College, Ohio University, Radford University, Fairmont State, East Tennessee State, Frostburg State, Virginia Tech and Mississippi State.
During their visit to Washington, SKCTC students made a 20-minute presentation in regard to two community projects: the story-gathering students have done in the Appalachian Studies class and story-gathering for its own sake, and for use in SKCTCs next Higher Ground community drama production as well as for the Crawdad Concert and Arts Fair held each year on the Cumberland campus.
Southeast students attending included Keith Ellis, Nick Cornett, Corey Lowe, Andrew Milwee, Justin Clay, Audrey Clay, Charita Day, Stephanie Day, Candra Sweet, Jamie Bates, Crystal Gilbert, Greg Bennett, Greg York, Ebony Hamrick, Jessica Blakley, Charlene Drew, Rita Carreras, Rhonda Reed, Shawn Sweatt, Julie Sizemore and Jason Edwards.
College staff attending were Ann Schertz, Robert Gipe, Tony Sweatt, Joe Scopa and Elana Scopa.
