Southeast students excel at HOSA conference

Several students from Southeast Kentucky Community amp; Technical College took part recently in the annual Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) Conference held in Louisville. A total of eight students from SKCTC attended the three-day conclave which allowed each to compete in various competitions and to attend a variety of in-service sessions while interacting with fellow club members from across the commonwealth.

HOSA allows students to work as a team, increase leadership skills, gain confidence and interact with health professionals, noted SKCTC faculty member Nancy Miles, who teaches in the respiratory care program on the Pineville campus. Its certainly an ideal way for our students to learn and grow as they prepare for a career in an allied health discipline.

While at the conference, SKCTC students, a total of seven, competed in several competitions turning in impressive results.

Winners from Southeast include:

First placeHealth EducationJonathan Davis, Sabrina Lawson, Amy Roberts.

In the contest students worked as a team to teach health-related concepts.

Second placeHOSA BowlWilliam Branstutter, Kenny Ellis, Ben Roark and Martha Rutherford.

The contest served to test the knowledge of students in various health science topics, HOSA concepts and parliamentary procedures.

The HOSA organization at Southeast has a total of 17 students from the respiratory care and surgical technology programs. Ms. Miles serves at the groups sponsor and for more information about the club call 337-3106.
