Southeast Scholarship Golf Classic is Aug. 1

Local golf enthusiasts will once again have the opportunity to compete while helping deserving students attend Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College as they participate in the Lillian Faye Simpson Scholarship Golf Classic to be held Saturday, Aug. 1 at Sleepy Hollow Golf Course in Cumberland.

The event is a four-player scramble, best-ball, (normal rules) match play format with all proceeds going to the scholarship fund of SKCTC. A new format will be utilized this year with the expansion to two flights, thus permitting more golfers to play. There will be an 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. tee time for flights with registration set for 7:30 a.m. and 11 a.m.

Entry fee is $250 per team, which includes green fees, use of a cart, event t-shirt and lunch. Golfers will be able to compete for various special feat prizes, including a putting contest as well as a chance to win prizes for the longest drive, closest to pin shot and closest second shot on a designated hole. Additionally, a cash prize for $600 will go to the first place team with the second place unit pocketing $400. The third place team will be awarded $200.

As in years past, Creech Chevrolet, Buick, Pontiac of Harlan will sponsor a new automobile that can be won by the first participant to record a hole-in-one on the par-three hole No. six on the front nine.

Tiffany B. Scott, Scholarship Golf Classic director, noted the event is a great opportunity for golfers to enjoy a day of keen competition while also supporting scholarships for worthy students.

Year after year, students at Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College have been faced with a rising cost to their education, she said. Tuition, coupled with gasoline and foods costs, not to mention childcare, have placed a hardship on many students. It is no secret that in this critical time when unemployment rates are climbing to an all-time high that a college or technical degree is a requirement for landing a good paying job.

"We at Southeast are working hard to aid students and to make a difference in their lives. With that in mind, why not consider spending a delightful and fun-filled day of golf at the beautiful and challenging Sleepy Hollow Golf Course.
