SOUTHEAST KENTUCKY COMMUNITY AND TECHNICAL COLLEGE PRESENTS 51ST COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY

CUMBERLAND, Ky. Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College (SKCTC) presented its 51st Commencement and Awarding of Credentials during a ceremony May 6th at Harlan County High School. Nearly 200 graduates participated, receiving various degrees, certificates and diplomas.

Hundreds of people attended the event. The program featured remarks from Southeast President Dr. Lynn Moore who applauded the efforts of the graduates, stating that many had overcome much to achieve their goals of a college degree. Also speaking to the graduates was Rayburn Doss, chairman of the SKCTC Board of Directors.

The keynote speaker for the evening was Sandi Curd, the Promise Zone Coordinator for Eastern Kentucky.

Ms. Curd congratulated the class of 2016 and spoke about her own college graduation experience and offered several pieces of advice to the graduates. Even if your body has to leave the mountains, dont take your heart. Curd said.

She also compared the graduates to a popular sports star. In these mountains, you are the Lebron James and when you leave, there is no replacing you. Ms. Curd encouraged the class of 2016 to stay out of debt and to be proud of where they are from.

Graduate Bailey Trejo spoke on behalf of the class of 2016. She commended her fellow graduates on a job well done.

Also during the evening, Dr. Moore honored to the colleges New Horizons winners Astor Simpson, Rick Mason and Josh Brooks. The trio will represent Southeast at a conclave sponsored by the Kentucky Community and Technical College System.

Music for the event was provided by the Harlan County High School Jazz Band, with Anna Jo Creech, Heather Lewis and Wendy Williams singing the National Anthem and My Old Kentucky Home.
