SKCTCs Newman leading Bell council on literacy

Kathy Newman, a 14-year employee of Southeast Kentucky Community amp; Technical College who is currently serving as president of the Bell County Council on Literacy, Inc., received notification recently that the organization is the recipient of a Kentucky Colonels Good Works Program Grant.

The grant for $2,100 will enable the center to purchase several computers.

Ms. Newman, an education specialist at the college along with college faculty member Amy Simpson, BCCL treasurer, attended a presentation and ceremony recently in Lexington where they received the award.

Newman noted that many who participate in the literacy program move forward with their lives by gaining their GED before moving toward opportunities in higher education, with many enrolling at SKCTC.
