SKCTC TO HOST SEVERAL EVENTS IN FEBRUARY IN HONOR OF BLACK HISTORY MONTH

CUMBERLAND, Ky. Several events will be going on at each of the campuses of Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College (SKCTC) in February showcasing Black History Month.

The series kicks off on Tuesday, February 9th on the Cumberland campus with Lift Evry Voice and Sing! Mr. Daryl L. Harris, an Associate Professor in the Department of Theatre and Dance at Northern Kentucky University, will host the program, which will present spiritual music with roots in Kentuckys African-American culture. This will take place in the art gallery of the Godbey Appalachian Center at noon. Lunch will be served before the program at 11:30 a.m. This event is sponsored by SKCTC Diversity and Inclusion and Harlan ARH and there is no charge to attend.

On Thursday, February 11th, Dr. Herbert Douglas, Professor Emeritus of Law amp; Justice Studies, along with Africana Studies at Rowan University in Glassboro, New Jersey will present the history of how African-Americans in the United States have traditionally struggled to overcome what he calls the destructive impacts of white supremacy and white domination in their lives, including prospects for advancement. The talk will take place at noon in the art gallery of the Godbey Appalachian Center on the Cumberland campus and lunch will be served. This event is sponsored by SKCTC Student Support Services and SKCTC Diversity and Inclusion. There is no charge to attend.

The following week on Wednesday, February 17th, Dr. Alicestyne Turley, who is the Director of the Carter G. Woodson Center and an Assistant Professor of African and African American Studies at Berea College, will discuss President Abraham Lincoln and Lincoln Memorial University and their impact on the area. This will take place at 11:30 a.m. at the Middlesboro Community Center, located at 705 North 30th Street. Lunch will be served. Lunch and the event are sponsored by SKCTC Diversity and Inclusion and Middlesboro ARH. There is no charge for this event.

The Whitesburg campus will be the site for the next event, coming up on Tuesday, February 23rd. SKCTC Associate Professor and Education Program Coordinator Tammie Chapman will present My Mountain Heritage and My Music. Ms. Chapman will showcase her rich cultural heritage and tradition along with a love and passion for music for those in attendance. This event will be held at 11 a.m. in the Auditorium of the Belinda Mason Building. Lunch will be served. Lunch and the event is sponsored by Whitesburg ARH. This event is free to all.

Finally, to wrap up the months festivities, the SKCTC Diversity and Inclusion Program will host Super Sunday, an event designed to help African-American teens make the decision to go to college. This event will be held at the Greater Mt. Sinai Baptist Church in Lynch on Sunday, February 28th. The program will begin with morning service at 11 a.m., followed by dinner and then a college fair at 1:30 p.m. During this event, we will also honor the 2016 Super Sunday Hall of Fame recipient Mitchell Earl Brown during the program. Mr. Brown is a minister, formerly of Cumberland, and will be the guest speaker during the morning service. There is no charge for this event.
