    SKCTC PROFESSOR WINS LITERARY AWARD

    CUMBERLAND, Ky. Professor Robert Gipe, the Director of the Appalachian Program at Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College (SKCTC), brought home a big honor recently from Berea College.

    Gipe won the 2015 Weatherford Award for fiction for his novel Trampoline, presented by the college and the Appalachian Studies Association. According to the awards website, the Weatherford Award is presented to authors whose books best illuminate the challenges, personalities and unique challenges of the Appalachian South.

    The award, established in 1970 by the late former Proctor and Gamble Communications Director Alfred Perrin, commemorates the life and achievements of W.D. Weatherford, Sr., a pioneer and leading figure for many years in Appalachian development, youth work and race relations, and of his son, Willis D. Weatherford, Jr, former president of Berea College.

    I'm very honored to receive this award. Just to be nominated is humbling, Gipe said. I'm grateful for all my friends in the community and in my larger circle of readers and writers who helped make this book possible.

    Gipe, along with the other winning authors, will be recognized at the 2016 Appalachian Studies Association Conference at Shepherd University in Shepherdstown, West Virginia.
