The Carlie Thompson Scholarship Fund at Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical
College has been created by his widow, Joyce. The first scholarship will be awarded
for the fall 2014 semester and will be for the amount of $1,000. The scholarship will
be given to a SKCTC student from Bell County who has an interest in pursuing a career
in mathematics. Mr. Thompson, who passed away in 2012, taught at Southeast for nearly
a quarter of a century and played a prominent role as the college expanded its services
and programs into Bell County. Before coming to SKCTC, Mr. Thompson taught for many
years at Bell County High School. In addition to his teaching duties, he worked for
a number of years as a seasonal ranger at Cumberland Gap National Historical Park.
Here, Mrs. Thompson, left, recently presented Dr. Lynn Moore, president of Southeast,
with a check to implement the scholarship fund.
