Golf Classic a Success

The Scholarship Golf Classic, which annually raises money for deserving students to attend Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College, was held recently at Sleepy Hollow Golf Course at Cumberland with 14 teams competing for various awards and prizes.

According to Rhonda Creech, event coordinator, the classic generated a total of $2,275 which will go into the SKCTC scholarship fund. The event was begun in 1989 by Faye Simpson, and over the years literally hundreds of students from Harlan, Bell and Letcher counties have received scholarships to attend the college.

The winning foursome in the best-ball scramble event, recording a 14-under par score of 56, was the Samp;S No. 3 team comprised of Ed Creech, Eddie Creech, Jr., Jaimie Creech and Phillip King, Jr.

Taking second place was the Ready to Work Team made up of Roland Pee Wee Cornett, Jody Gluck, P.D. Kincheloe and Jimbo Vicini.

Several special feat awards were issued to participants including Derek Wright, putting contest; Ed Leisge, longest putt; Todd Watts, longest drive; Jon Simpson, closest green o and Roland Cornett, longest drive from the blue tee.

The event was hugely successful, and we are so appreciative of those who came out and played. We also are most thankful for our many sponsors who lend their support year to year, said Ms. Creech. It was a wonderful day of fun and fellowship. We are already looking forward to the 2010 event.
