Colleges chapter of Phi Theta Kappa is awarded Pinnacle Award

The Southeast Kentucky Community amp; Technical College Xi Sigma chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, a national honorary for students attending two-year colleges, has been awarded the pretigious Pinnacle Award for increasing local membership by 25 percent during the past year.

According to Pat Baker, who serves as a sponsor, a total of five membership scholarships was awarded with each valued at $45.These are to be used to pay membership fees for new inductees.

The Xi Sigma chapter inducted 60 members during the past year, and to be a member of Phi Theta Kappa one must have a 3.5 grade point average and have completed 20 credit hours. The group is service oriented and annually conducts food and coat drives, visits local nursing homes and assists with the Tri-City Empty Stocking Fund.

Deborah Hodge serves as the chapters president and Sherry Tinsley is vice-president. Baker is the advisor for the SKCTC Cumberland campus while Sandy Holbrook and Robin Haggerty serve in the same capacity at campus locations at Whitesburg and Middlesboro, respectively.
