Bridge students complete four-week session

Recent high school graduates took part in the annual Nursing and Allied Health Summer Bridge Program sponsored by Southeast Kentucky Community amp; Technical College.

Participants in the four-week program are graduates of high schools within Harlan County who will be attending SKCTC where they plan on pursuing degrees in nursing or allied health.

During the session, student received college credit in the Introduction to College course. Students also took several field trips including forays to ARH in Harlan and to the Debusk School of Osteopathic Medicine at Lincoln Memorial University. Summer bridge students also observed various surgical procedures via I-TV from the Chandler Medical Center at the University of Kentucky.

Additionally, Southeast faculty in nursing and allied health spoke to the students regarding their programs. Students also received hands-on laboratory hours with Elana Scopa who conducted exercise with the students as a prelude to the courses they will be taking during the next two years at the college.

Tiffany Scott, Health Careers Program Coordinator, conducted several activities with the students including exercises in sensitivity to aging, infection control and the effects of smoking. Students also received extensive tutoring in mathematics from Greg York, an employee of the colleges Academic Support Center.

College faculty involved with the summer program include Milton Borntrager, Sabrina Cummings, Kathy Guyn, Elana Scopa, Tiffany Scott, Carolyn Sundy and Erin Wilson.
