African and African-American Musical Connections in Appalachia
Presented by: Dr. Kathy Bullock Professor of Music
Berea College
In this talk/demonstration, Bullock explores the connections between African-American
and Appalachian music. Beginning with the African musical heritage, she moves to the
United States, revealing the origins of African American folk songs, spirituals, work
songs, and blues and their substantial influence on Appalachian culture. Through stories
and songs, she invites the audience to explore and participate in the exciting musical
experiences shared by African- American and Appalachian cultures.
