Adult Education Programs at SKCTC earn proficient ranking

Kentucky Adult Education (KYAE) has announced on the fiscal year for 2008-09 good news for the Southeast Kentucky Community amp; Technical College Adult Education Programs. Both the Harlan and Bell County programs are in the proficient category with each site slated to receive additional funding. The performance funding is to be added to the current year budget of the program.

Brenda Morris, who heads the program at SKCTC, praised the hard work done by her staff and called the news an indication of the efforts made to improve literacy levels in the region. She noted, however, that much work needs to be done as approximately 42 percent of the population of Harlan County and a similar number among Bell Countys populace are in need of remedial work in academics and basic education skills in order to achieve a GED or to become enrolled in college-level classes.

Adult education programs are evaluated in two key areas: enrollment and academic performance. The KYAE performance and accountability model consists of three categories: excellence, proficient and needs improvement. Programs in the proficient category do not qualify for program performance funding; however, they are eligible for student performance funding.

Ms. Morris also mentioned that GED classes are currently being offered at several sites across the region and that personnel from the Southeast program are eager to work with and aid anyone who has a desire to learn and work toward securing their GED.
