At 91, Barney Sword Jr. understands the importance of family and the strength of a helping hand. That is why he and his family have created a scholarship in memory of their parents. The Mary and Barney Sword Sr. Scholarship Fund will benefit Southeast students from the Tri-Cities, an area Sword knows well.
Later this month local golfers will tee off to help students attend college. On Friday, April 22, the Southeast Education Foundation will hold the Lillian Faye Simpson Scholarship Golf Classic at the Sleepy Hollow Golf Course in Cumberland.

Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College has received a $10,000 gift to benefit Southeast Scholars. Larry and Judy Grandey of Middlesboro donated the funds as a tribute to Larry's late father Max, a Veteran and lifelong learner who believed in paving the way for others.
Born and raised in Harlan, Kentucky, Frank Robinette had a self-described "good childhood" and "great family." By the time he graduated from Harlan County High School in 2011, however, his family had been shattered by an unexpected loss.
Tara Dewees never believed she would fall into the trap of substance abuse. A native of Harlan County, she was raised by a single mother who battled addiction.
"Watching her struggle--I was always so against it," said Dewees.
As a young adult, Tara earned an associate in arts from Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College. The single mother of three enjoyed a stable, fulfilling job as a homeless case manager at a local agency in Harlan.
Johnson invited Field to visit the maker's space on Southeast's Middlesboro Campus. The IDEAS center--Innovation, Design, & Entrepreneurship at Southeast--is equipped with 3D printers, laser printers, and other tools to help bring the ideas of aspiring entrepreneurs to reality.
Tuesday, October 26, from 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m., Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College will host a luncheon for Dr. William H. Turner on the Cumberland Campus. Employees, students, and members of the community are invited to attend.
