The Paul M. Angell Family Foundation has awarded a $553,833 grant to Southeast Kentucky Community & Technical College to support and expand the Southeast Scholars program in Harlan County.
The investment will help the college increase program participation among Harlan County
students and strengthen pathways to postsecondary education and high-demand careers.
Southeast Scholars serves middle and high school students through educational opportunities,
career exploration, mentorship, student support services and scholarship assistance.
"We are delighted to support this impactful program for Harlan County students and are proud to partner with Southeast Kentucky Community & Technical College -- an important partner providing accessible degree and certificate programs leading to living-wage careers," said Sharon Davis-Angell, who grew up in Bledsoe in Harlan County and is now a philanthropist and trustee with The Paul M. Angell Family Foundation.
PMAFF is committed to strengthening educational attainment and economic mobility in Harlan County.
"This grant reflects the Foundation's commitment to creating meaningful social impact by helping communities overcome longstanding inequities and build safer, healthier, and more thriving futures," said Kim Van Horn, CEO of PMAFF.
The grant will support multiple components of the program, including scholarships, expanded program staffing, transportation resources, curriculum and technology enhancements, an expanded Summer Institute, cultural enrichment opportunities, and year-round student engagement activities.
"Mrs. Sharon Davis-Angell understands the strength, resilience and promise of Harlan County because it is home,” said Dr. Lee Harrison, SKCTC Chancellor. “The generosity of this grant will help more Harlan County students have access to life-changing opportunities that can transform not only their futures, but the future of our entire community. We appreciate their support of this shared mission."
The initiative's long-term goals include 100 percent high school graduation and 100 percent college acceptance among participating students.
The grant supports the college's vision of preparing the next generation of leaders, professionals, skilled workers, and community members who will contribute to the region's economic vitality.
“The Southeast Scholars program serves students who are the first in their families to pursue higher education,” said Jennifer Cornell, Southeast Scholars coordinator. “We appreciate this grant that will help students overcome barriers and provide them with the tools and confidence needed to succeed in college and beyond.”
