New program at SKCTC empowers students with autism and other neurodiversities
Published on Oct 8, 2025
LifeWorks for Autism has officially launched the LifeWorks Bridge Academy at Southeast Kentucky Community & Technical College to provide specialized support for autistic and neurodiverse students as they transition into higher education and adulthood.
Students enrolled in the program will participate in one-on-one coaching, structured
study hall sessions, regular progress meetings, monthly enrichment opportunities,
and support with accessing campus and community resources, all built around their
individualized success plan. The independent living curriculum includes training in
financial literacy, career readiness, social interaction, health and wellness, independent
living skills, and more. Family education and virtual access to programming and curriculum
is also included.
“This initiative brings together our focus on academic and career development with LifeWorks’ strength in personalized support and daily living skills,” said Dr. Lee Harrison, president of SKCTC. “By combining academic guidance with practical life skills, we’re helping students build confidence and independence as they take the next steps in their journey.”
The Bridge Academy is rolling out at the SKCTC Whitesburg campus, and students from across the college network are encouraged to inquire and apply, with additional campus locations being served based on student interest and need.
Autism diagnoses continue to rise across the United States, and families often struggle to find resources that meet their children’s unique needs. The LifeWorks Bridge Academy directly addresses this challenge by creating a bridge between high school and the independence of adulthood. Many students with a documented diagnosis qualify to participate at no cost through funding available from the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation (OVR), making the program accessible to families.
LifeWorks for Autism is a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering autistic young adults to achieve independence, self-direction, and meaningful employment. With a focus on person-centered support, LifeWorks ensures that each student’s journey is guided by their unique goals, strengths, and aspirations.
