A familiar gathering space on the Cumberland campus now bears a new name in tribute to one of the region’s most trusted voices in weather and communication. On Thursday, Southeast Kentucky Community & Technical College dedicated the Brandon Robinson Porch, honoring the legacy of alumnus, former staff member and WYMT chief forecaster Brandon Robinson.

As a student and later staff member at SKCTC, Robinson advanced the broadcast program, SETV, and public relations before his career at WYMT. Throughout all, he has championed community and been passionate about weather forecasting.

“Just as a porch shelters us from rain, snow, and sun, Brandon has stood between us and the storm, helping our community prepare, stay safe, and come together,” said Dr. Patsy Jackson, interim president and CEO of SKCTC. “This space is a place where people naturally gather—we share stories and we build connections here. It is a very fitting tribute to Brandon, whose life’s work has been to stand at the front, like a porch, offering protection, safety, and community.”

The porch, long a place where students, employees, and community members gather to talk, laugh and reflect, now carries an even deeper significance. Across Appalachian communities, the porch is more than just a structure—it’s a symbol of welcome, conversation and connection. Dedicating this space to Robinson, whose career has centered on reaching out and bringing people together, reflects the spirit of both the man and the mountains he calls home.

The dedication drew colleagues, friends, and former students, including Professor of Communications Carlton Hughes, who helped lead the ceremony and was among those who worked closely with Robinson during his time at Southeast as both a student and employee. Dr. Bruce Ayers, president emeritus of SKCTC, reflected on Robinson's impact on both the college and the southeastern Kentucky region.

The event also marked the launch of the Brandon Robinson Communication Fund, established by the Southeast Education Foundation. As former WYMT general manager and longtime colleague, Neil Middleton, who worked closely with Robinson during his time at the station, and his wife Stephanie provided the fund’s inaugural gift.

“Stephanie and I appreciate the opportunity to honor our friend and to sow seeds back into Harlan County, where our Eastern Kentucky roots were first planted,” said Middleton. “Harlan County will always be home and holds a special place in our hearts. We invite others who want to give in Brandon’s honor to join us in this effort.”

The fund will help sustain and grow programming through the Frazier Broadcast Center, which Robinson helped shape.
