For Dyer, who began teaching at Hazard Community & Technical College in 1999 and joined the Southeast Middlesboro campus in 2013, the recognition is about more than a title—it reflects the relationships he’s built and the progress he sees in his students.

“It’s a very nice honor—I’m humbled to receive the award,” said Dyer.

Known for his student‑centered approach, Dyer values the community college setting where students receive more individualized attention. “I love the interaction with students, and we have a great set of faculty and staff here,” he said.

A mathematics instructor, Dyer’s favorite course to teach is Calculus. “I enjoy seeing students come in from College Algebra and conquer the harder material,” he said. Among his many success stories, one former student is now a civil engineer with the Kentucky Department of Transportation.

His advice to students: practice consistently and ask for help. “We’re always available to help,” said Dyer.

Outside the classroom, Dyer recently discovered a love for pickleball, a hobby he shares with his daughter.
