Southeast Kentucky Community & Technical College recently organized a successful Adult Peer Support Specialist training program for 15 participants at the Knox County Detention Center. The program aimed to equip participants with skills to build a career upon their release from incarceration. It was led by Jill Creech, SKCTC recruitment specialist; Derek Collins, SKCTC Knox Campus administrative coordinator; and Rusty Siler from EKCEP's SITE program.

Participants in the course spent four days of intensive training, starting Sept. 5, and each successfully passed their certification exams. The program’s success has sparked excitement and optimism among the students, who look forward to applying what they have learned to build a better life after their release.

"This class represents the first step toward a brighter future for these individuals,” said Dr. Patsy Jackson, SKCTC interim president/CEO, who praised the collaborative effort and the program’s potential impact. “Peer Support Specialist training not only provides valuable skills, but it also offers hope for meaningful careers that can help these women reintegrate into society."

The Adult Peer Support Specialist program reflects SKCTC's dedication to addressing the unique challenges faced by individuals in the justice system. By working closely with the Knox County Detention Center and EKCEP, the college continues to expand its role in community rehabilitation efforts. This collaboration underscores the importance of education and skill-building in helping participants transition back into society, contributing to reduced recidivism and offering new opportunities for personal and professional growth.
