Hall High School Alumni Association Celebrates Their 20th Year of Scholarships at Southeast

Cumberland, KY - The Hall High Alumni Association recently celebrated its twentieth consecutive year awarding scholarships at Southeast Kentucky Community & Technical College. This fund awards scholarships ranging from $1,000-$2,000 to one or two students each year. 

This year’s recipient is Jimmy Rouse from Wallins, a 2020 graduate of Harlan County High School. He is enrolled in the nursing program on the Cumberland Campus and is one of 97 students awarded scholarships at the college during the fall semester.

After finishing the program at SKCTC, Jimmy plans to attend Eastern Kentucky University, while working as a registered nurse to obtain a bachelor’s degree and later become a nurse practitioner. “I want to give back to my community and use my passion for nursing in my hometown,” he said. “I want to spend the rest of my life caring for patients and doing the job that I love.”

Jimmy was recommended for the scholarship by his pastor, Rev. Buddy Simpson, who praised Jimmy’s character: “He is a wonderful person and has great potential. I believe he will become an excellent nurse.”

“Now, more than ever, students are in need not only of financial assistance, but the encouragement and assurance that comes from their receiving a scholarship.  It says that there are many who believe in them,” said Dr. Michelle Dykes-Anderson, vice-president for institutional advancement at Southeast.

To be eligible for the Hall High School scholarship, recipients must be recently graduated seniors who are descendants of a Hall High School Alumnus. They must also be enrolled at Southeast full-time, maintain a 3.0 GPA, and demonstrate financial need and good citizenship.
