Southeast Names Students of the Month for September
Middlesboro, Pineville, Whitesburg, Cumberland, and Harlan, KY – Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College (SKCTC) has named its Students of the Month for September 2020.
- David Pratt, Cumberland Campus
- Vickie Washington, Harlan Campus
- Johnathan Green, Middlesboro Campus
- Amber Johnson, Pineville Campus
- Malcolm Bailey, Whitesburg Campus
On the Cumberland Campus, first year nursing student David Pratt chose Southeast for the “one-on-one interactions you get with the instructors.” Pratt, who was forced to leave the declining coal industry after a decade, has begun what he calls a “whole new chapter” in his life. “Starting over was a scary thought, but Southeast made the process simple,” he said. He credits the support of College staff member Andrea Massey and the Ready to Work program for “the amazing opportunity it has given me.
Vickie Washington, who is pursuing an associate of arts degree on the Harlan Campus, said her children were a big reason she chose Southeast. Not only is staying close to home important, but having a flexible schedule during the COVID-19 pandemic has been essential. “It helped me be able to take classes without having to sacrifice the time I needed to teach my kids & work, too,” she said. “The instructors and staff where always helpful and eager to see students succeed.”
Middlesboro’s recipient Johnathan Green is working towards his degree in diesel technology.
“It was very important for me to be able to return to the Middlesboro campus. This is my home, and every day, I can go home to my wife and children,” he said.
Surgical technology student Amber Johnson said the reason she chose Southeast is “simple.” Citing affordability, flexibility, and small class size as benefits, she said, “This college allows me to work while I take the classes I need to create the future I want. Overall, I felt that I would fit better here.”
Second-year Whitesburg student Malcolm Bailey is pursuing an associate of science degree with eventual plans to study biochemistry. “I chose Southeast because of its affordability and proximity to home. I am extremely satisfied with my decision and strongly recommend it as an alternative pathway for high school graduates seeking optimal education at an affordable price,” he said.
Each SKCTC campus has a Student of the Month selection committee appointed by its campus director. In making its choice, the committee weighs criteria such as academic performance, extracurricular activities, work ethic, helpfulness to others, and whether the student has had to overcome significant barriers in achieving academic success.
