Southeast Announces All-Academic Team

Cumberland, KY – The Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS) is honoring its top students for the 2019-20 academic year. Thirty-two students, two from each of the 16 colleges, were selected for the KCTCS All-Academic Team.

This year’s team members representing Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College are Alyssa Adams and Lindsay Bentley.

According to Southeast President Vic Adams, students were chosen “based on a rigorous process that focuses on academic performance and community service.”

Alyssa recently graduated from the Physical Therapist Assistant program at Southeast.

“I have known since high school that I wanted to be a PTA,” she said. After undergoing several rounds of physical therapy for a basketball injury, she knew this would be her career path.

“My experience at Southeast has been phenomenal,” she said. “I am so thankful I got to stay close to home yet still chase my dreams. I would like to thank my family, friends, and teachers for all of their support and encouragement.”

Alyssa will take her licensure exam in July and hopes to find a job in her field close to home.

This fall, Lindsay will further her education in the Doctor of Optometry program at the University of Pikeville. She admits that at first, she was “very confused about which career path I wanted to take.” After job shadowing her optometrist along with a few other careers she thought would interest her, she realized optometry was the best fit.

Fortunately for Lindsay, Southeast and UPIKE have formed a Collaborative Educational Attainment Agreement that helps to support graduates who seek admission into the program.

“What this means is that each year, the University of Pikeville provides priority admission to three Southeast graduates who have successfully completed our pre-optometry program and who meet the qualifications for matriculation to the Doctor of Optometry program,” said Dr. Adams. “We are proud that Lindsay is among those Southeast graduates who will benefit from this partnership.”

Lindsay says that she is grateful for this opportunity and her choice to attend Southeast. After graduating from high school, she knew she wanted to stay close to home “until I could figure out what I wanted to do. Southeast let me do that, while also saving money. Huge bonus!”

A former student worker at the college, Lindsay said, “I would like to thank my family, my boyfriend, the professors and also the coworkers and friends I made while working at Southeast.”
