Southeast Names March Students of the Month

Middlesboro, Pineville, Whitesburg, Cumberland, and Harlan, KY – Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College (SKCTC) has named its Students of the Month for March 2019:

 

• Dana Estes, Pineville Campus
• Dawell Robinson, Whitesburg Campus
• Ben Cochran, Harlan Campus
• Rebecca Elayne Fortner, Middlesboro Campus
• Rebecca Whitney Raleigh, Cumberland Campus

 

Dana Estes, a Medical Laboratory Technician student on the Pineville Campus, says that for her, Southeast was the most affordable option for higher education. “I never really knew what I wanted to be until I came to the pre-admission conference,” she says. “After that phone call from Tracy [Eldridge] telling me that I had been accepted,  I felt excited and calm to know that I finally have my chance to do what I love and to better myself for my daughter and myself.”

 

On the Whitesburg Campus, Dawell Robinson plans to graduate this summer with an associate of science degree. Of his decision to enroll at Southeast, he says the convenient location played a big role. He also says that when he visited campus, “the staff was great and went out of their way to help me.” Outstanding customer service allowed him to “lock the decision in.” Dawell hopes to be accepted into the Physical Therapist Assistant program following graduation.  

Construction Technology student Ben Cochran had a dramatic reason for choosing Southeast. He says, “Three years ago, I came to Southeast jobless and with a broken neck from a logging accident.  I had a wife and two children.  Immediately, I received the help, guidance, and resources I needed.” Cochran, who also worked as an underground coal miner for 14 years, says that he thanks God for leading him to Southeast: “Today, I have a diploma in construction technology, numerous certificates in construction technology, and will have earned my associate degree in General Occupational Technical Studies this May.  I also just received a full time job in construction.” He adds, “Southeast provided me with the best program that suited me and my dreams.”

Rebecca Elayne Fortner of Pineville is an outstanding duel credit student on the Middlesboro Campus. She plans to eventually pursue a degree in biomedical engineering, and she says she chose Southeast because “it allows me to experience what college is really like while still being in high school. It serves as a transition from a small high school to a larger campus.”

 

On our Harlan Campus, transfer student Rebecca Whitney Raleigh will graduate this spring with her associate in science degree. She says, “I chose Southeast because I can receive a quality education while staying in my home town. Southeast offers a more personal level of education and support attributable to the small class sizes and dedication of professors to see their students succeed. I love my college!”

Each SKCTC campus has a Student of the Month selection committee appointed by its campus director. In making its choice, the committee weighs criteria such as academic performance, extracurricular activities, work ethic, helpfulness to others, and whether the student has had to overcome significant barriers in achieving academic success.
