Middlesboro, Pineville, Whitesburg, Cumberland, and Harlan, KY – Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College (SKCTC) has named its Students of the Month for February 2020.
- Kayla Brock, Pineville Campus
- Kierra Bates, Whitesburg Campus
- Heather Saylor, Harlan Campus
- Rhonda Beeler, Middlesboro Campus
- Bradford Harris, Cumberland Campus
On the Pineville Campus, surgical technology student Kayla Brock says that she chose Southeast because it is “close to home and offers a wide variety of medical career paths. Having familiar faces and local instructors make learning a new career more comfortable for me.”
Kierra Bates, a student on our Whitesburg Campus, plans to pursue a degree in nursing. She says that she chose Southeast because we have “the best” nursing program.
Harlan resident Heather Saylor chose Southeast because of our “reputation, affordability, programs offered, friendliness of the faculty and staff” and because it made her “feel at home.” She says that she is grateful because not only does she have an education, “but I have made lifelong friends.” Her eventual goal is a degree in human services, and she will earn her Recovery Coach certificate in May.
Middlesboro’s Rhonda Beeler is a GED+ and Work Ready recipient who logs 25 hours a week in Southeast’s Student Affairs Department. She plans to graduate as a physical therapist assistant in 2023. For 10 years before Rhonda came to Southeast, she was a stay-at-home mom of four, now ages 17, 16, 7, and 3. She says that she chose Southeast not only for its convenient location, but for its kind, helpful staff. “The support of the people here is truly helping me succeed,” she said.
In Cumberland, Bradford Harris of Loyall is pursuing an associate of arts degree on our Cumberland Campus. He says that he chose Southeast because “I have focused my work on helping Young Appalachians feel empowered to stay here and make a successful life for themselves. Southeast has given me an abundance of resources and has been an amazing place to learn.”
Each SKCTC campus has a Student of the Month selection committee appointed by its campus director. In making its choice, the committee weighs criteria such as academic performance, extracurricular activities, work ethic, helpfulness to others, and whether the student has had to overcome significant barriers in achieving academic success.
