Southeast Announces Students of the Month for January

Published on Jan 29, 2020

Middlesboro, Pineville, Cumberland, Harlan, Whitesburg, KY — Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College (SKCTC) has named its Students of the Month for January 2020:

  • Cheyenne Howerton, Pineville Campus
  • Gabrielle Baker, Whitesburg Campus
  • Jason Clem, Harlan Campus
  • Bryce Lawson, Middlesboro Campus
  • Gwyndolyn Turner, Cumberland Campus

Respiratory Care student Cheyenne Howerton considers enrolling at Southeast among the best decisions she has ever made.  “I’ve been blessed with the most amazing instructors who go above and beyond for their students,” she said.

Whitesburg student Gabrielle Baker has completed Southeast’s Medical Assistant Program, and she will graduate this spring with her associate of science degree. She chose Southeast because “the staff and faculty treat everyone like they're family. It's a wonderful atmosphere to learn and grow!  I'm so glad I chose Southeast!”

Jason Clem, a laid-off miner, husband and father of two, is a freshman on the Harlan Campus pursuing a degree in nursing. He said that he chose Southeast because “it is 8 miles from my home, has the best nursing program, affordable and the faculty and staff have gone far and beyond to accommodate me. I am thankful for Southeast!”

Bryce Lawson is a sophomore on the Middlesboro Campus pursuing an associate of arts degree. His goal is to become a pharmacist. Bryce said he chose Southeast because we are close to home and affordable.

Gwyndolyn Turner is a first year student on the Cumberland Campus working towards her associate of science degree. “I chose Southeast because it is close to home and budget friendly,” she said.

Each SKCTC campus has a Student of the Month selection committee appointed by its campus director. In making its choice, the committee weighs criteria such as academic performance, extracurricular activities, work ethic, helpfulness to others, and whether the student has had to overcome significant barriers in achieving academic success.
