SKCTC Celebrates the Birthday of the U.S. Marine Corps
Middlesboro, KY – On Monday, November 12, at 12:00 noon, Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College (SKCTC) will celebrate the 243rd birthday of the U.S. Marine Corps in the new Veterans Center on the Middlesboro Campus. All Southeast students, staff, faculty, community members, and veterans are welcome to attend.
According to Sam Coleman, Director of Southeast’s Small Business Development Center, “We will cut the cake, read the Commandants’ Message, and remember.” Coleman is also an officer having served in the 8th Marines, an officer selection officer in Virginia, and an instructor at the Basic School.
The official birthday of the Marine Corps falls on Saturday, November 10. “We’re actually a couple of days late,” says Coleman. “But better late than never.”
Coleman anticipates that the campus will host similar events in the new center for all branches of the military. The Army’s birthday in June 2019 will be next.
Last month, the college opened Veterans Centers on its Middlesboro, Harlan, Cumberland, and Whitesburg campuses. These areas were renovated and furnished thanks to a grant from the Kentucky Veterans Program Trust Fund. Southeast President Dr. Vic Adams says that the college is grateful to the Trust Fund’s committee.
“More than anything, we want our students to succeed,” says Adams. “These veterans have selflessly served our country, and I hope that these spaces will give them support and show how much we appreciate their service.”
