SKCTC Partners for the Future

Published on Jul 14, 2017

Cumberland, Ky. –  Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College (SKCTC) is joining forces with Cengage and Jobs for the Future, a grantee funded by the Appalachian Regional Commission, to help employ our most vulnerable citizens. The goal of the partnership is to help older youth and adults who need a high school diploma in coal-impacted communities to secure employment in computer and medical IT fields.

The college will provide students with access to the computer and tutoring labs at its five campuses as well as a success coach who will support each student with a personalized action plan. Southeast will also participate in a newly created Workforce and Employer Leadership Council, which includes national and regional employers, who will help identify emerging skills within the IT sector and provide feedback on new credentials needed for employment.

Additionally, Southeast was awarded 20 student scholarships providing tuition for Career Online High School, an accredited, online high school diploma program designed for out-of-school and unemployed youth and adults to earn a secondary credential while developing entry-level workplace skills.

“The college’s established relationships with local employers and other agencies give these participants a wealth of support,” says David C. Dixon, Project Team Leader for Enhancing Programs for IT Certification (EPIC) at SKCTC. “We look forward to helping them secure high-wage, high-skilled jobs.”
