Published on Apr 28, 2017

Cumberland, Ky. –Dr. Edsel T. Godbey, the founding president of what was then the UK Center in Cumberland, and the namesake for the Godbey Appalachian Center on the Cumberland campus, will deliver the keynote address Friday, May 5th for the 52nd commencement and awarding of degrees at Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College (SKCTC).

The service will begin at 6 p.m. in the gymnasium of Harlan County High School. 302 students are eligible to receive degrees, diplomas and certificates.

A native of Casey County, Dr. Godbey became the president of the college in 1959 and served in that role until 1962. He was at one time the associate director of the UK Community College System and an executive with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, better known as SACSCOC. He also went on to establish a nationally known consulting agency specializing in institutional management and planning.

SKCTC Interim President Dr. Dennis Michaelis said he is thrilled that Dr. Godbey is serving as this year’s speaker and looks forward to his address.

“It is a true honor for Dr. Godbey to be the keynote speaker at our graduation ceremonies.” Dr. Michaelis said. “He served in higher education for many years and I’m sure his knowledge will be beneficial to our students as they get ready to begin their own journey.”

Dr. Michaelis invites everyone from all of Southeast’s service areas (Bell, Harlan, Letcher and Knox County) to come out to support and commend this year’s graduates for all of their resolve and hard work.
