    SKCTC Celebrates Entrepreneurship Week

    Cumberland, Ky. – February 17-24 is national Entrepreneurship Week, and Southeast Kentucky Community & Technical College (SKCTC) is working with and helping create entrepreneurs around the state.

     

    For example, SKCTC has recently expanded the Selling to the World Initiative, promoting an entrepreneurial culture for the digital economy within the most economically disadvantaged areas of eastern Kentucky. It provides personalized, one-on-one mentoring and workshops that equip creative people and startup businesses with the knowledge and skills to start businesses using the Internet. It also enables them to earn supplemental income through their products with the potential of growing businesses to create jobs.

     

    Southeast is putting a stronger emphasis on entrepreneurship in other ways. The college has partnered with Big Sandy and Hazard Community & Technical Colleges, along with Shaping Our Appalachian Region (SOAR) and the Eastern Kentucky Concentrated Employment Program (EKCEP), in order to build an employer-driven digital economy curriculum and to develop digital innovation hubs throughout Southeast Kentucky to promote telework and entrepreneurial opportunities. The project, which has been named Digital Careers Now, will specifically target dislocated workers from the coal industry and develop short-term training regimens focused on the needs of industry and employer partners, shortening the length of time needed for a student to enter the workforce.

     

    Southeast President Dr. Vic Adams recently attended a professional development workshop offered by the National Association for Community College Entrepreneurship (NACCE), in partnership with the Appalachian Regional Commission. The focus was on how to apply entrepreneurial methods to community college leadership.

     

    At the conclusion of the workshop, presidents signed the NACCE Presidents for Entrepreneurship Pledge (PFEP). Through the PFEP, the presidents committed to advance entrepreneurship in their communities and create an entrepreneurial culture on their campus with multiple access points to support local startups and small businesses.
