Brandon Robinson to deliver SKCTC commencement address

Brandon Robinson of WYMT on setBrandon Robinson is coming home. As a student at Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College he sharpened his broadcasting skills and laid the groundwork for a successful career in television as a meteorologist for power-laden WYMT-TV, the CBS affiliate for all of eastern and southern Kentucky.

Robinson will return to deliver the keynote address for the 49th commencement and the awarding of credentials at SKCTC. The event is set for Friday, May 9 at 6 p.m. at Harlan County High School, U.S. 119 at Rosspoint.

He will address the class of 2014 that numbers in excess of 300 and includes graduates from each of the SKCTC campuses located at Harlan, Cumberland, Whitesburg, Pineville and Middlesboro. The ceremony also marks the first spring commencement presided over by Dr. Lynn Moore, the colleges ninth president. She began her duties last summer.

Robinson, a native of Lynch in Harlan County, is a graduate of Cumberland High School and achieved an associates degree from Southeast before enrolling at Morehead State University where he earned a bachelors of arts degree in communications. Presently, he is enrolled in the broadcast meteorology curriculum at Mississippi State University. It was at SKCTC where he first delved into broadcasting, working in the schools TV production studio in Falkenstine Hall.

He wore many hats in the production of various programs, he also did weather forecasts over the closed-circuit channel that beamed across the Cumberland area. As a student at Southeast, it was the first place I was able to get my hands on the technology that would lead me to where I am today, he said. I was able to learn and work under the direction of some of the very best instructors anywhere, they taught me the value of hard work and setting big goals for myself.

Upon transferring to Morehead, he threw himself into broadcasting, becoming a fixture on MSUs nightly program Newscenter, effortlessly delivering the weather as well as on occasion serving as the news anchor. Additionally, he worked in radio as was heard over MSUs potent public station where he did sports and newscasts.

Upon graduation from Morehead, he seized the opportunity to work for WYMT in Hazard. I was back in the mountains and working for the station that first inspired me to become a broadcaster.

SKCTC President Dr. Moore stated that it is an honor to have Robinson deliver the commencement address. We are happy to have Brandon return to his roots, his alma mater, and to have the chance to deliver the address to our graduates. I am certain he will impart much wisdom to the class of 2014.

He is also a sitting member on the Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College Board of Directors.

Robinson acknowledged he is excited as well as grateful to be delivering the commencement address and will do his best to inspire those who are reaching their goals of attaining a college education. Southeast means so much to me, I am pleased to be able to take a few moments to speak to the class. I look forward to it, he said.
