Celebration of Poet George Ella Lyon To Take Place in Harlan April 30

There will be a celebration of the life and work of Kentucky poet laureate and Harlan County native George Ella Lyon at the Harlan Extension Depot on Saturday April 30, 2016 in Harlan, Kentucky. The “George Ellabration,” which is sponsored by several organizations in Harlan County, will include testimonials, readings from Lyon’s work by friends and colleagues, live music, an art exhibit, a dramatic enactment of one of Lyon’s books for children, a presentation of poems by local students inspired by Lyon’s work, words from Lyon herself, and more.

SKCTC Automotive Program Receives National Re-Accreditation

The automotive training program at Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College has received re-accreditation by the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF) and The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE). Southeast’s automotive program is now certified through the year 2020.

Southeast’s Scholarship Golf Tournament attracts record field

A record field of 18 foursomes participated in the annual Lilian Faye Simpson Scholarship Golf Tournament held August 1 at Sleepy Hollow Golf Course at Cumberland. Golfers from across the region enjoyed 18 holes of competitive golf and camaraderie and all for a good cause – assisting deserving students at Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College.

Collection of letters chronicling life in the 1940s presented to SKCTC Archives

Margaret Edds was overjoyed when she and her sister, Rachel, discovered a cache of hundreds of letters written by their late mother Sara. The letters chronicled the daily life of Sara as she worked in the thriving coal town of Lynch in Harlan County prior to World War II and later when she returned to her native Tennessee and began working for the U.S. Government at Oak Ridge, the location responsible with manufacturing key materials used to make the first atomic bomb which subsequently ended the war

Southeast Scholars, a program for local youth in grades 7 through 12, is operated by Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College along with support from donors and from college endowment resources. The mission of the program, according to coordinator Sandra Brown, is to assist the students in their quest to attend college by providing support and skills vital for each to become a collegian.

Gipe’s book ‘Trampoline’ drawing praises

Robert Gipe, the director of the Appalachian Program at Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College, was the speaker recently for a meeting of the Harlan Arts Council where he read passages from his book “Trampoline.” The book, released in early spring by the Ohio University Press, has been well received and is being hailed by acclaimed Appalachian authors Gurney Norman and Silas House as a masterful and original work.

A ground-breaking program billed as “History Alive” is booming across the radio airwaves of southeastern Kentucky. Produced by Phyllis Sizemore, curator of the Kentucky Coal Mining Museum located at Benham and by Therese Osborne, the Appalachian Program facilitator for Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College, the program airs weekly over WCPM-AM in Cumberland and alternate weeks on the Appalshop station WMMT-FM in Whitesburg.

SKCTC Vice President Adams elected to national board

Dr. Vic Adams, a vice president and the chief workforce officer for Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College, has been elected to serve a two-year term on the board of directors for the National Council for Workforce Education (NCWE). Adams will begin his tenure July 1 and will be up for re-election in 2017.

On May 15 the Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College campus at Middlesboro hosted a “Jumpstart” program for local high school juniors and seniors. Carlton Hughes, professor of communication, coordinated the program with Southeast’s recruiter Kim Maynard along with the help of college faculty and staff.

On May 14 the SKCTC Cumberland campus hosted a “Jumpstart” program for local high school juniors and seniors.Carlton Hughes, professor of communication, coordinated the program along with Cookie Baldwin, Deb Hodge, Sherry Tinsley, Shelia Gordon, and Erin Reasor. Students came to campus and had mock advising sessions with counselors, campus tours, and informational sessions.

The yearly induction ceremony for new members of Phi Theta Kappa Xi Sigma chapter of Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College was held recently in the Edsel Godbey Appalachian Center on the Cumberland campus. Over 60 students, representing each of the SKCTC campuses, were ushered into the esteemed national honorary during a formal ceremony.
