"Nearly everyone enjoys visiting a museum, but very few understand all that is involved behind the scenes in making a museum visit an enjoyable experience," said Alexia Ault, registrar and cataloger for the Kentucky Coal Museum and Appalachian Archives, commenting on the new window exhibit at the museum located at Benham. "That is why we are allowing the public to see firsthand some of the activities they would normally never see by doing them in the front display window of the Kentucky Coal Museum."

Southeast’s Appalachian Program receives funding for additional arts programming

A coalition coordinated by the Appalachian Program at Southeast Kentucky Community & Technical College (SKCTC) recently received $100,000 from the National Endowment for the Arts Our Town Program in support of eighteen months of innovative arts programming fostering community interaction focused on emerging regional artists as part of a larger community renewal effort.

The Glow Run 5k Run / 1 Mile Walk Returns to the Kingdom Come Swappin' Meetin'

The 3rd annual Kingdom Come Swappin’ Meetin’ 5k will be held Oct 3, 2014. This is the second year it will be run as a Glow Run. Participants will receive a t-shirt and glow items. Everyone is encouraged to wear things that will glow in the dark! Pre-registration fee is $20 and onsite registration is $25.

Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College students Emily C. Nantz of Harlan and Amanda Baker of Middlesboro were named recently as a members of the 2014 KCTCS All-Academic Team. Honorees from all 16 KCTCS colleges were honored during a luncheon in Owensboro and held as part of the system's New Horizons initiative.

Year after year, students at Southeast Kentucky Community & Technical College students have been faced with a rising cost for their education. Tuition increases coupled with a rise in gas and food costs, not to mention childcare, have placed a hardship on many students. The Southeast Scholarship Golf Tournament supports local students each year with a dedicated effort from our community.

SKCTC and its Workforce Solutions team have wrapped up Project STEM camps held at Whitesburg and on the Middlesboro campus. The camps, held for two days, were open to children ages 12-15 and featured sections on energy, environmental science, physics and mathematics.

Phi Theta Kappa induction ceremony held at SKCTC

An induction ceremony for new members of the Xi Sigma chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, an academic honorary at Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College, was held recently in the Edsel Godbey Appalachian Center on the Cumberland campus. Members of the organization must have a 3.5 grade point average or higher and have completed 20 hours of course work leading to an associate’s degree.

The deadline to file for a degree and apply for spring graduation in the Registrar’s office is February 7th January 23, 2014

Students are encouraged to apply for graduation the semester prior to when they are expected to complete their credential requirements. Applications turned in after the established deadline will automatically be moved to the applications for the next semester.

The 2014 Miss Southeast Scholarship Pageant scheduled for February 8th is now accepting applications

The event will be Saturday--February 8th @ 6:30 pm in the Godbey Appalachian Theatre. The winner will receive $1000 tuition scholarship and represent SKCTC at the Mt. Laurel festival in May. Pageant applications are available at any SKCTC admissions office. Deadline to enter January 31st .

The Microsoft Office 365 suite of software for PC, Mac and mobile phones is now FREE for all Southeast students.

All KCTCS students who are currently enrolled in a course are eligible to install the full version of Office 365 Pro Plus on up to 5 devices for free. This includes PC, Mac, Apple tablets and phones, and Android tablets and phones. The software will continue to work as long as you are enrolled in at least one class at a KCTCS college.

Over 90 junior high pupils took part in the Middlesboro Science Day event organized by Southeast Faculty Joseph Johnson and Rajiv Singh, as well as Southeast Recruiter Kim Maynard. Students took a tour of campus and participated in science experiments and college information sessions.

Jimmy Rose, a 33-year-old singer from Pineville who sang from the heart about coal mining, took third on the Sept. 18 two-hour finale of ‘America’s Got Talent.’ A graduate of Pineville High School, Rose is an alumnus of Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College.

Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College was the sponsor of the recent Harlan County - Knox Central and Bell County - Middlesboro football games. The college made an $850 donation to each HCHS and BCHS athletic funds. Additionally, college recruitment staff and faculty were on hand to promote the college’s various programs.

This is the third group of Chinese students to enroll at the Middlesboro campus. Students Zhou Haoran and Pan Yuwei will be enrolled for the 2013-14 school year and will be sophomores.
